00:21:41 I grew up in northwest Ohio in a farm community, small community. I'd always been interested in aviation. There was a small area on the other side of the cornfield where they would fly remote-controlled airplanes, and I was always fascinated. So I would ride my bike down there and watch them flying it around. They actually had, you know, like a grass runway that they had mowed in there.
00:22:11 I was just always interested in aviation. My two choices out of high school were either air traffic controller or pilot. So I guess it was just in my part. My dad did work in the aviation community. He was an instrumentationalist on jet engines. And then my brother ended up going to Ohio State University to become an aeronautical engineer.
00:22:38 So I guess maybe it's in the family, too, a little bit. It runs in the family or flies in the family, I guess. That's really cool. And is there like a specific moment you remember where you were like, oh, my God, I really want to do this? Or was it just, you know, being immersed in this?

But just really, and to this day, still love the world of every aspect of it. I enjoy it. I actually still am involved in collegiate flying, where I judge the collegiate.
00:23:58 Collegiate Flying Association. Their competition is coming up in May again. So national. So there's like, you know, Oklahoma University, Oklahoma State, Embry-Riddle, Kent State, Purdue, Ohio State. You know, all the big schools go there and compete in flying competitions and ground competitions. And I love...
00:24:21 I help out Western Michigan has a program and I help out their team sometimes. I just love everything about aviation. It's just, I don't know. It's just very interesting, very passionate about it.
00:24:38 And how did you, so I actually have no knowledge about how it works to actually get to be a pilot and especially for the Marine Corps, right? How was that path? Like how does it work, I guess? Actually, there's a couple different paths. You can go off to college. There are several big colleges that have amazing programs.
00:25:06 You can do the four-year program, but then you've got college expense on top of it and, you know, your tuition plus your flight fees. You could do it on your own by, you know, just finding a local flight instructor. The hardest part of, you know, if you want to get like a job with the airlines or a corporate pilot, you need a thousand hours and it takes a lot of money to build that time. So that's where it is the hard part.

Banks, you know, when you went in to cash a check, you had to go into a bank and cash a check. I'm sure a lot of my viewers just cannot, the viewers right now cannot comprehend that. But you actually physically had to go in and you took a check, you know, you got for your birthday or.
00:26:33 Whatever. And your payment for work. Those checks had to be flown back to the original bank because you got those banks, those checks. You got your checks returned back to you. And so a lot of people back in that time would fly checks. I mean, they would fly them in all sorts of aircraft. So today, obviously, you don't fly checks anywhere. It's all done online.
00:27:01 So I think the path now is pretty much flight instructor, get your flight time. She just reached 1,000 hours, so she's going to start applying for bigger flying options, flying bigger aircraft. That's so interesting. I hadn't thought about that because, yeah, I mean, when I was little, I still experienced, you know, my parents cashing in checks and stuff like that.

My dad did go to a two-year tech program. But they pushed all of us kids into college. I don't want to say pushed. They encouraged it. I have wonderful parents.

I applied through what we call a fleet session board. And what was really cool is I had over 400 hours of flight time already because I had got my private, my commercial, my instrument. I was a flight instructor also at Kent State.

So when I say it was atypical is if you have a desire to fly in the military, the military pays, you get paid and then they pay you to fly. So they pay for your flight training. And so I kind of did it backwards. So I did have a lot of loans, but it's just, it worked out for me. It was the...

I imagine while in the Marine Corps, there weren't too many women? Back then, I don't know what it is now. I haven't checked in a few years. But overall, there were 4% of the Marine Corps were women.

The Navy, a good friend of ours from Boy Scouts joined the Navy and he went November. I'm like, why are you going in November? That's Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year's. Well, guess what? You know, I live in Michigan.
00:33:39 in Illinois, he spent every holiday with his parents. He didn't get to come home, but they went to Chicago and they got a hotel and they picked him up. I'm like, oh my gosh, it's not fair. It's definitely a challenge. In the Marine Corps, we tend to say we do things harder, not smarter.

00:37:05 Probably 150 kids in the flight program and probably maybe a dozen were women. We all got along great. Great men, great women. But the Marine Corps was a different experience. It was different. And if I listened to even a quarter of a percent of the men when I joined the Marine Corps, I would have never lasted.

And, well, I was the youngest. I graduated when I was 17. I started college when I was 17. It was weird. I couldn't even sign my own paperwork because I was only 17 years old.
